Banned Book Report nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton was written in 1967. This novel tells the story of the conflict between two different social groups, the greasers and the socs. The socs were the socials who lived in the rich part of town, and the greasers were the lower class youths. This novel tackles issues such as violence, class conflict, and prejudice. The novel takes place in the early sixties. The Outsiders examines how two different groups compete, and unite for survival, which is often justified with violence. Hinton’s publishers decided that she should publish the novel under the name S.E. Hinton. This made some censor advocates outraged, and different groups challenged the novel at different times. Not only was the book challenged for violence and offensive language, it was also challenged for the fact that most of the main characters came from broken homes. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Although this book was challenged numerous times, it was never banned. A challenge that was never passed came from Elenor, West Virginia’s George Washington Middle School. The school challenged the book due to the gang references and the gang fights. Most of the arguments the Elenor residents made were that the reading level of the book was for young adults, and violence and profanity was used at the same time. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Hinton’s reasoning for using violence and profanity was that she wanted readers to understand the social conflict between the rich popular kids and the outsider underprivileged kids. She showed that even though two different social groups with hatred for each other, still shared some of the same qualities such as fear, love, and sorrow. She also wanted readers to understand that conflicts are not always peachy, and sometimes violence is used. That is just the reality of life and it happens all of the time. Young readers who were exposed to this type of violence had a better understanding for it and were informed for the better. That is whyShow MoreRelatedThe Outsiders : The Outsiders By S. E. Maternal Depression A Standard ( New York State...

Despite widespread recognition of the problem of maternal depression and the potential benefits of screening, screening for maternal depression is not a standard (New York State Department Of Health, 2016). This policy brief was written for healthcare providers who treat expectant and new mothers with goals to improve the screening and to increase the number of women receiving appropriate treatment in our community. The recommendations address measures to improve early identification of the condition and preventive/follow-up care delivery for women in prenatal to postpartum periods. Problem About 8 to 15 percent of childbearing women experience post partum depression during the first year after childbirth, and poor depressed women experience depressive symptoms as high as 48% (Onunaku, 2005). Thirty-seven percent of low-income mothers with young children who have had a major depressive disorder do not receive any treatment, compared to twenty-five percent of their higher-income counterparts (Saxton, 2016). Maternal mental health affects their ability to care for themselves and nurture their children. Untreated mother’s depression adversely affects a child’s brain and socio-emotional development, academic achievement, and child’s long-term success. Answer: Introduction: The study is all about the critical review of the process of performance management of Red Robin Restaurant. It is a popular restaurant in Canada that especially famous for delivering Gourmet Burgers. It started its business operation in 1985. Red Robin can be called as a fun family restaurant. This company aims to deliver the best quality of food and services to the customers (Redrobincanada.com, 2015). This report contains a review of the process of performance management of Red Robin Restaurant. Process of performance management of Red Robin: Management level of Red Robin thinks that the process of performance review of every individual employee needs to be done by the discussion with the managers and employees of the organization (Aguinis, 2014). Review of the performance is an important as well as an essential process to understand that the performance of individual can meet the goal and objective of the organization or not. On the other hand Kaselis (2013) stated that, the philosophy behind performance review is to know the internal strengths and weakness of an individual employee in order to meet te clearly mentioned goal or objectives of the organization. With the help of performance review, an individual can assess the performance of job and responsibilities. Red Robin has developed some rating definition for reviewing the performance of the individuals. Mainly four performance ratings are there in order to understand the category, as well as skills of the employee. Therefore, E stands for Exceeds Performance Expectations; M stands for Meets performance expectations, MS stands for Meets some Performance Expectations, FM stands for fails to meet Performance Expectations. Workers of Red Robin have to select the rating definition tab in order to understand the level of competencies of the employees. The tabs include technical skills, quality of work, quantity of work, approach to work, management skills, leadership qualities, ownership, problem solving, communication skills, achievement of goal, interpersonal skills, interactive skills etc. Workers select the definite key of their choice as per the level of competencies of them. Effectiveness of performance management of employees: According to Tracy (2014), managing the performance of employees of organization supervisors of the particular organization needs to provide flexible environment that helps to share and exchange the expectations of the employees as well as objectives of the organization. Employees often exchange feedback of them and also identify the opportunities of learning, training and development. These processes can be helpful in order to evaluate the objectives of performance of the employees of the organization. On the other hand, Vakkuri (2013) stated that, some factors have to be included while delivering the employee engagement process, and this also helps to manage the performance of the employee. Most of the employees want to know the level of expectations of them. They also have to have the tools by that he/she can do the effective work. Employees also want to receive good recognition and reward for the achievement of their work. They also demand the process of training and development through the entire process of their work. Employees also demand positive work relationship among the supervisors, managers to the lower level staffs of the organization. Employees also want to give feedback to the authority of the organization about the job as well as condition of the workplace, etc. Every sort of workers of an organization needs to develop their performance with the help of training and development. As stated by Greiling and Halachmi (2013) the feedback process is very important as well as necessary in order to complete the whole communication process. Feedback can help in order to complete an effective communication within the organization. Two-way communication with effective feedback mechanism helps to deliver the process of effective communication among the employees and managers of the organization. Reviewing the performance management process of Red Robin: In order to review the performance management process of Red Robin, it can be stated that there is the lack of two-way communication process within the employees and the authority of the organization. Effective process of providing feedback also lacks from the process of performance assessment of the employees of the organization. Therefore, effective performance management process always needs the evaluation option for the employees. Therefore, redefined process of performance management can be assured by the following measures. The process of performance management should be comprised of the planning of performance, day to day coaching and feedback process, a quarterly performance check-in, and formal performance review. All these processes should be aligned with the mission as well as vision of the company. On the other hand, as per the statement Hrabrin Bachev (2013), objectives of effective performance should be flown from the mission, vision, support and goals of the organization. Red Robin should provide the effective process of feedback to the employees of the organization. They should provide effective training and development opportunities for the employees of the organization. They should improvise the online and offline medium that helps the employees to provide the feedback opportunities for the employees of the organization. An effective planning of performance helps to ensure a mutual understanding of the responsibilities of the job. It also ensures mutual understanding of standards as well as expectations of the organization. Therefore, broad and clear communication is required for the process of reviewing the performance of the employees of the organization (Med.stanford.edu, 2015). Red Robin should also set a SMART goal for effectively reviewing the performance management of the organization. An organization needs to take specific objective for performing as per the requirements and objectives of the organization. This objective should be measurable for achieving the success. These plans should be ambitious and reachable. It should be bound by the time. Therefore, setting a SMART objective helps the employees in order to assess their performance in accordance with the set goals and SMART objective those are linked with the particular goal and objective of the organization. Conclusion: This report has reviewed the existing performance management process of Red Robin. As per the drawbacks of this process, a new plan of the performance objective has also been discussed properly. Reference list Books Aguinis, H. (2014). Performance management. Pearson. Tracy, B. In modern society, there is force per unit area on individualists to conform to the most outstanding subculture in the local country ( I think ) . Those who fail to conform become castawaies, like the character Quackenbush. Outcasts are ridiculed so that they see themselves as inferior to everyone. In the book, Quackenbush tries urgently to happen person who he is non inferior to, and starts a battle with Gene. While castawaies are created in the same manner as Quackenbush, he reacts much otherwise to being an castaway than most castawaies make. To the criterion castaway, everyone is the mark, finally, non merely a few inferior people. Some people are self-obsessed. Gene would be a good illustration if he was existent. Impact of jet free essay sample

One way of producing mechanical work from fluid under pressure is to use the pressure to accelerate the fluid to a high velocity in a jet. The jet is directed on to the vanes of a turbine wheel, which is rotated by the force generated on the vanes due to the momentum change or impulse which takes place as the jet strikes the vanes. Water turbines working on this impulse principle have been constructed with outputs of the order of 100,000 kW and with efficiencies greater than 90%. In this experiment, the force generated by a jet of water as it strikes a flat plate, conical plate, and hemispherical cup may be measured and compared with the momentum flow rate in the jet. 2. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The Jet Impact Apparatus, H8, has been designed for use with the Hydraulic Bench, H1. This provides the necessary water supply and flow measurement facility. Figure 1 shows the arrangement in which the bench supply is led to a vertical pipe terminating in a tapered nozzle. We will write a custom essay sample on Impact of jet or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This produces a jet of water which impinges on the vane in the form of a Flat Plate, Conical Plate, or Hemispherical Cup. The nozzle and vane are contained within a transparent cylinder; at the base of the cylinder there is an outlet by which the flow may be directed to the weighing tank. As indicted in Fig. 1, the vane is supported by a lever which carries a jockey weight and which is restrained by a light spring. The lever may be set to a balanced position (as indicated by the tally suspended from it) by placing the jockey weight at its zero position and then adjusting the knurled nut above the spring. Any force generated by impact of the jet on the vane may now be measured by moving the jockey weight along the lever until the tally shows that the lever has been restored to its original balanced position. Figure 1. Diagrammatic Arrangement of Apparatus. 3. BACKGROUND Consider a vane symmetrical about the x-axis as shown in Fig. 2. A jet of fluid flowing at the rate of EMBED Equation.3 (kg/s) along the x-axis with the velocity uo (m/s) strikes the vane and is deflected by it through an angleÃŽ ², so that the fluid leaves the vane with the velocity u1 (m/s) inclined at an angle ÃŽ ² to the x-axis. Changes in elevation and in piezometric pressure in the jet from striking the vane to leaving it are neglected. Figure 2. Vane symmetrical about x-axis. Momentum enters the system in the x direction at a rate of: EMBED Equation.3 Momentum leaves the system in the same direction at a rate of: EMBED Equation.3 The force on the vane in the x direction is equal to the rate of change of momentum change. Therefore: EMBED Equation.3 (newtons) Ideally, jets are isotachtic, or constant velocity so that uo = u1. Therefore: EMBED Equation.3 (newtons) Table 1 shows vanes of various shapes, the deflection angle, and the theoretical calculations of the force developed on the vanes.

Significant Leaders of the Russian Revolution essays

Significant Leaders of the Russian Revolution essays Revolutions in the past have occurred because of powerful dynamic leaders. The Russian Revolution implied complete and drastic change, but the revolutionaries were the people who tried to bring about such changes. Lenin and Stalin were influential revolutionary leaders that set up a new way of living and thinking which helped lead to the Russian Revolution. The Russian Revolution is regarded as one of the most remarkable events in human history. It brought an end to the Czarist regime. In its place, a republic was established. The success of the Russian Revolution changed the character of the nationalist revolutions in the colonial world. They were given new social and economic content. The Russian Revolution of 1917 transformed a poverty-stricken Czarist Russia into a superpower, under the guiding and very powerful and harsh spirits of Lenin, Stalin, and other leaders. The major leader of the Bolsheviks was Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov who later adopted the name of Lenin. Lenin and the Bolsheviks took control of the government and lead it to the Bolshevik Revolution. The civil war in Russia and the revolution destroyed the Russian economy. Lenin shifted his role and started to revive the economy and reconstructed the government. This Bolshevik Revolution ushered in social, political and economic equality. It gave a turn to the current th oughts of socialism and communism. The communists in Russia struck at Czarism vigorously through a revolution and established a communist regime. Their communism was based on the doctrines of Karl Marx. Most people today when they hear of the word revolution think of political revolution and summon up visions of terror, bloodshed, and change brought about by a few with the use of a force. Revolution, therefore, means a threat, fear and something essentially evil to most people. An example of this definition was Russia under the rule of Joseph Stalin. After Lenin died, Stalin seized power and tra...

Summary Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1

Summary - Essay Example that Ronald Regan did not formulate the drug law with the intention of saving the American society but with the intention of making his leadership popular. From the interview, it is evident that the new drug law simply focuses much on fishing out African-Americans and taking them to prison since the notion that most police departments have is that individuals from this race are potential criminals. As a result, the drug law, as Michelle asserts, is simply a replica of the Jim Crow System, which ensures mass African-Americans incarceration. Certainly, the evidences provided by Michelle are backed up by most of the incoming callers who also agree that the drug law is just but another form of Jim Crow System (On-Point with Tom Ashbrook). Generally, the drug law has resulted to some innocent individuals being taken to jail for drug offences, thereby their rights being violated. Since most U.S. police departments are keener on the way African-Americans carry out themselves than other races, a higher percentage of prisoners in most jails are African-Americans. Therefore, there is clear evidence that racial discrimination against African American still exists, and there is enough evidence depicted when an explanation of what feels like to be a young African-American in the U.S. is described; African-Americans are always viewed as potential criminals. In this On-Point Radio discussion, Tom Ashbrook interviews two guests; David K. Randall (a professor at New York University) and Rosalind Cartwright (a professor at Rush University). The discussion focuses much on Randall’s book â€Å"Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep.† Generally, what inspired Randall to write this book was the fact that he used to sleepwalk. Therefore, after visiting several doctors with few positive results, he decided to carry out research on sleep in humans. According to Randall, his main focus was to recognize whatever takes place when an individual is asleep. In addition,

Communication Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 26

Communication - Essay Example Juveniles have unique qualities which influence how the message should be delivered to them, these include: poor communication skills particularly the listening aspect of it. Most members of the group cannot listen to and comprehend court directives about behavior. Some juveniles, especially those in employment should have their employer being part of the solution, especially by enforcing compliance (Mark & Gamez-Rugama, 2015). Other juvenile offenders do not comprehend what is required of them due to insufficient education. As such, using simple language for communication will improve their compliance with the rules of engagement. There are many potential challenges in communicating the message to juveniles, these include: firstly, a negative attitude adopted by juveniles perceiving their neighbors or government agents as too hard-nosed and hell-bent on their destruction to listen to or follow their directives. Secondly, insufficient education and knowledge in juveniles usually complicate their understanding of what is right for them and their subjective thoughts (Haggard, 2014). Lastly, their young brains and weak personality may create unnecessary distractions and or lack of consistency in their responses to questions or issues directed to them, hence their erratic behavior. These weaknesses require constant support to them and monitoring of their moves, which would be costly if not impractical (Haggard, 2014). As Mark and Gamez-Rugama (2015) said, I would revise my approach in the video by adopting simpler, more personalized communication strategies such as mentioning names. I would also: capitalize on the mode of communication which is most effective for each individual, such as using gestures or non-verbal styles for disabled juveniles; use communication techniques which build effective relationships with juveniles so that they can develop a feeling of

Consumers consider this class of assets better than public equity since the liquidity and transparency level is lower, and is a more established class of assets. (BME, 2007). From a report by the Bank of England, with an increase in interest rate, consumers will shift their investments to suit their risk attitudes. If the rise in interest rate reduces their level of earnings, investors will opt to sell their assets and invest in a different category that will maximize their earnings. For example, a rise in interest rate of bonds will lead to a fall in its price. With this, investors will tend to sell their bonds before maturity and reinvest in securities with a lower prevailing interest rate. On the same report, savings have a direct relationship with changes in interest, whereas investments have an indirect or negative relationship. The increase in interest will make savings more attractive and reduce greatly on borrowings. This is because the rate of borrowing will increase and the income from

How Management Accounting Is Affected By Changes In The Economy And Business Environment Accounting Essay

How Management Accounting Is Affected By Changes In The Economy And Business Environment Accounting Essay This assignment shall show how management accounting is affected by changes in the economy and business environment. The advances in information and communication technology upon management accounting will be commented on, described and discussed in detail. Management accounting is important nowadays due to the technology and customers are now seeking high quality products at low prices due to the globalization factor. The main reason recently is due to reduction or free trade, so companies from abroad can challenge the local firms. Management accounting is the budgetary information, used by managers and employees within an organization. It provides them with useful accounting information that is forward-looking instead of looking at past trends. Gowthorpe (2008) stated that management accounting information in turn gives better business decision making allowing consistency in management and control functions within an organization, ensuring managers plan, organise and control the business. Management accounting systems provide information, both financial and nonfinancial, to managers and employees inside an organisation. Management accounting information is tailored to the specific needs of each decision maker and is rarely distributed outside the organisation. [Atkinson et al (2001)] In this past decade management accounting has seen changes which have been affected by changes in political leadership, the globalizing forces, technological advances, including the advances of broadband, governance and ethics have all affected management accounting. In this assignment, technological advances and globalization have been chosen as the most important factors in affecting management accounting. One of the most significant influences on management accounting has been the technology resulting in a change for the betterment, as can be seen in the instance of broadband internet technology. The business communication technologies such as e-commerce being business conducted using the internet, have supported business activities making great impact on the business world today by developing a way to ensure considerable cost savings. The on-line sales facilities indicate an ever growing market for the use of ecommerce. Showing a new way on how sales and profits can be achieved by such a streamlined business process and the system must be used proficiently than rivals providing potential for firms to ensure a competitive advantage. The use of internet continues to unsettle and alter other markets. There is also one further advanced IT application being used called enterprise resource planning systems (ERPS). The ERPS includes a bundle of integrated software application that controls the relevant figures within a business, including bookkeeping, budgeting and product profitability analysis for accounting purposes. The modules are there as a complete set of relevant information is in this database and so users can use it directly from a PC according to Drury (2004). The technological advancement has affected use of accounting information and production. As explained above accountants now write-up, store, manage and address the data in computers that are then easily accessible directly by managers. The managers go on to make better decisions so they generate reports and analyse in further detail by using the spreadsheet software on the computers. Just-in-time (JIT) theory ensures there is minimum waste in producing the product and prevents activities that waste cost and do not add value to the product. The time for the product or good to be made can be decreased by restructuring and making the production process simpler. Garrison et al (2003) stated some benefits in using a JIT system that include funds that were tied up can be used elsewhere; time is reduced, leading to even more potential output and quicker response to customers. JIT also ensures reduction in defect rates resulting in customers being further satisfied and so there will be less wastage in producing replacements in the long term. Horngren et al (2002) stated there are many graphics packages that include CAD and CAM that aid this production process. CAD is used to design products that can be manufactured efficiently. Companies also use CAM (computer-aided-manufacturing), where the computer gives instruction and controls the production equipment. Leading to fewer delays with more efficient flow of production, costs are saved due to not requiring the need for hiring a workforce to do this. Using the computer-controlled machines is called computer integrated manufacturing systems (CIM). The two factors globalization and ICT have a connection as can be seen with internet, provides firms with access to a widespread market, geographically scattered customers, and suppliers. So with internet the whole world can be accessed easily by the business. Globalization is a process of interaction among companies and potential buyers maybe in different countries driven by international trade, investment and is supported through a medium by IT. This process affects management accounting and the countries get affected in various forms. The globalization factor has been happening rapidly in recent times due to changes in habits of buyers, sellers and advances in technology to open up even more markets. (http://www.globalization101.org/What_is_Globalization.html) Looking at the manufacturing industry, in the 70s there was rapid incoming competition from overseas firms, offering high quality products at much lower prices. This was because they could reduce their costs, so the firms here could only survive had they cut their costs; improve quality and products compared to the elite companies worldwide. The future though is looking bright for manufacturing companies as they are using technology well. Robots and computer-controlled equipment have replaced human labour. In direct production activities, human labour was identified as the highest cost in management accounting systems. In the last 20 years or so there have been a reduction in tariffs, quotas and other barriers in free trade. There have been greater sales from internet usage and improvements of global transport systems have ensured further globalization. Nowadays international competition is threatening local companies that are profitable in local markets. Though globalisation is greatly responsible for greater competition, it does give more access to new markets, customers and workers. Garrison et al (2007). There has been a change in companys strategies due to pressed foreign competition and growing multiplication of businesses. The changes have resulted in more accurate and high standards in management accounting such as JIT. Nowadays companies are adjusting their accounting systems for better decision making so they seek accurate and timely information about costs that include products, services and activities within the business. To remain competitive, managers need to understand the costs and implications of their decision making with help of management accountants on use of decision trees to help decision making. Reduction in trade barriers results in globalization at a high level affecting companies in the home market from strong and aggressive companies from overseas. There is a need to cut costs and ensure the quality of products is as good as or better than its overseas competitors. Companies need to ensure the management accounting is there to use and is up there with the highest of standards. If it is not up to scratch then even the best effort and hard work of employees within the organization wont make the firm competitive enough to win the fight against overseas rivals. The globalization in the economy has resulted in greater competition due to lesser selling prices as companies can afford to keep cheaper prices so there needs to be a well management in managing costs and the pricing of goods. The global economy has been ever changing in recent times and now with instant communications and competition, companies are required to continuously improve performance every year in management accounting in terms of cost, quality and service. Morse et al (2002). Nowadays the use of a well structured and thought out management accounting system that enhances the businesses performance to ensure they can keep up to date with the current changing trend of the economy. This is a change from when there was no need to keep costs down and out-of date management accounts, which is no longer possible as for a top firm that is successful needs an up to date management accounting is required. To conclude one can say globalization and IT have played an important role in affecting management accounting practice. Globalization has forced firms to be more efficient or competitive therefore it has directly affected management accounting because firms have to improve their standards. An improvement in IT has changed the way management accounting is done. Management accountants have started implementing various programmes such as JIT to improve standards and remain competitive. Therefore it can be said that these two factors have been significant in changing the role of management accounting.

Theodore Roosevelt :: essays research papers

With the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, not quite 43, became the youngest President in the Nation's history. He brought new excitement and power to the Presidency, as he vigorously led Congress and the American public toward progressive reforms and a strong foreign policy. He took the view that the President as a "steward of the people" should take whatever action necessary for the public good unless expressly forbidden by law or the Constitution." I did not usurp power," he wrote, "but I did greatly broaden the use of executive power." Roosevelt's youth differed sharply from that of the log cabin Presidents. He was born in New York City in 1858 into a wealthy family, but he too struggled--against ill health--and in his triumph became an advocate of the strenuous life. In 1884 his first wife, Alice Lee Roosevelt, and his mother died on the same day. Roosevelt spent much of the next two years on his ranch in the Badlands of Dako ta Territory. There he mastered his sorrow as he lived in the saddle, driving cattle, hunting big game--he even captured an outlaw. On a visit to London, he married Edith Carow in December 1886. During the Spanish-American War, Roosevelt was lieutenant colonel of the Rough Rider Regiment, which he led on a charge at the battle of San Juan. He was one of the most conspicuous heroes of the war. Boss Tom Platt, needing a hero to draw attention away from scandals in New York State, accepted Roosevelt as the Republican candidate for Governor in 1898. Roosevelt won and served with distinction. As President, Roosevelt held the ideal that the Government should be the great arbiter of the conflicting economic forces in the Nation, especially between capital and labor, guaranteeing justice to each and dispensing favors to none. Roosevelt emerged spectacularly as a "trust buster" by forcing the dissolution of a great railroad combination in the Northwest. Other antitrust suits under the Sherman Act followed. Roosevelt steered the United States more actively into world politics. He liked to quote a favorite proverb, "Speak softly and carry a big stick. . . . " Aware of the strategic need for a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific, Roosevelt ensured the construction of the Panama Canal. His corollary to the Monroe Doctrine prevented the establishment of foreign bases in the Caribbean and arrogated the sole right of intervention in Latin America to the United States.

Parent governors Essay

Parent governors are elected by parents / guardians of pupils that attend the school. If there is a vacancy parents are asked to nominate fellow parents, if more people are nominated than there is vacancies an election takes place. Staff governors Staff governors are in most schools and are appointed by support staff that work at the school. If they leave the school they cannot continue being staff governors. Teacher governors Teacher governors are elected by other teachers at the school. They must be permanent members of staff, again if they leave the school they cannot continue being a teacher governor. Community governors Community governors are people who live or work locally to the school and are chosen by the governing body. They are people who are committed to helping towards the success of the school. Foundation governors Foundation governors are chosen by foundation, voluntary aided or voluntary controlled schools. They represent the church or voluntary trust that set up the school. They have a responsibility to make sure the school is following the beliefs of the trust or charity. Sponsor governors Sponsor governors are people that have given financial assistance or services to the school. Head teacher The head teacher is a governor because of the post they hold. They do not have to accept the post but if that is the case the position stays open for them.

The Tough United States essays

The Tough United States essays After WWII, things werent looking too good in terms of communism. Many countries and nations were beginning to point in the direction of it while Marxism started to become a widespread philosophy throughout Europe. Even though the United States began to lose in Vietnam, they were able to keep away from Marxism and become the strongest economy in the world. The United States was able to keep there heads high and push through this period of time through four events that took place in the 20th century. Human relationships have always been dynamic. Change and adaptability have gone hand in hand with the passage of time for human society. Systems have been developed to regulate, direct and control the resources of the American society. The systems are referred to as governments and the resources as the populace or inhabitants and forces of production. A government must be dynamic in its nature reflecting the change in society. At times these systems have resisted the necessity to adapt with its components creating a deficit between the system and those it regulates. As the deficits develop, they cause instability, and could lead to revolution. This deficit represents Marxism and shows how important it is for a government to choose the correct system for the people and the current conditions. For Europe, it wasnt the right decision. The United States knew that Marxism wasnt the right path to choose but, Europe didnt know this and turned to the USSR as a role model. Marxian ideology, in its Russian-Communist projection, has always been in process of subtle evolution. The materials on which it bases itself are extensive and complex. This was said by George Kennan, a career diplomat and scholar who worked for the State Department. He wrote about the American attitudes towards this and it shows how they knew how Marxism wasnt right. The first event that the United States was abl...

How Many Zeros in a GoogolA Googolplex

How Many Zeros in a GoogolA Googolplex SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips What’s a googol, and does it have any relation to that similarly-named website? And what about a googolplex, how many zeros does it have? In this guide, we’ll give you googolplex and googol definitions, show how you can write them out, explain how they’re useful, and give examples on how you can start to understand huge numbers like these. What Is a Googol? That’s not a misspelling! The search website Google did get their name from this very large number. A googol, officially known as ten-duotrigintillion or ten thousand sexdecillion, is a 1 with one hundred zeros after it. Written out, a googol looks like this: 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. The scientific notation for a googol is 1 x10100. Even though we see a million and a billion as large numbers, there are 1 x1094 †millions† or 1 x1091â€Å"billions† in a googol, which shows you how much larger a googol is than these numbers. â€Å"Googol† got its name in 1938, when nine-year-old Milton Sirotta came up with the name and suggested it to his uncle, mathematician Edward Kasner. When the founders of Google were looking for a name for their website (back then called â€Å"BackRub†) that would demonstrate the vast amount of information it could provide, they chose â€Å"googol† but accidentally misspelled it, and a star was born. A googol is such a large number that our minds can’t even comprehend it, and because it’s so large it doesn’t have a particularly important role in mathematics. It’s even estimated that there are only 4 x 1079atoms in the universe, which is less than a googol. This means there isn’t a googol of anything on earth, not grains of sand, not drops of water in the oceans, etc. They don’t even come close to a googol which can help us get some grasp of how incredibly huge this number is. Therefore, the only times a googol is a somewhat accurate estimate of anything is for hypotheticals. A common example is that it’s estimated that there are 1 x10123 ways a game of chess could be played, which is fairly close to a googol. This is a very rough estimate, but it’s easy to see how the number could become so large. After each chess player makes their first move, there are 400 potential board setups. After each player has made two moves, there are 197,742 setups, after three moves there are over 100 million, and the number continues to increase exponentially from there. What Is a Googolplex? If a googol isn’t big enough for you, there are even bigger numbers out there! One of them is a googolplex, which is a 1 followed by a googol of zeros. The scientific notation for a googolplex is 1 x 1010^100 As massive as a googol is, a googolplex is many, many times larger, such that it’s impossible to write all the zeros out. There’d be ten-duotrigintillion of them! Counting to a googolplex would be even more impossible. We can’t calculate how long it would take, but it’s estimated it would take longer than the age of the universe. As a comparison, counting to a trillion would take roughly 31,709 years, and a trillion is only a 1 followed by twelve zeros! Edward Kasner and his colleague James Newman wrote this about a googolplex in their 1940 book Mathematics and the Imagination: â€Å"You will get some idea of the size of this very large but finite number from the fact that there would not be enough room to write it, if you went to the farthest star, touring all the nebulae and putting down zeros every inch of the way." Wow! So what’s the point of such a large number? Kasner discussed googol and googolplex to show the difference between incredibly large numbers and infinity. Kasner believed people overused the term â€Å"infinite† when they really only meant a large number, so he developed googol and googolplex to differentiate between the two concepts. Other Large Numbers You Should Know Guess what? There are even larger numbers than a googolplex, although not many. If you want to learn about all the large numbers and see a chart that makes it easy to compare them to each other, check out our guide to large numbers. One of the numbers larger than a googolplex is Skewes’ number. Skewes’ number, developed by mathematician Stanley Skewes, is 10 to the 10th to the 10th to the 34th, or this: . Skewes was especially interested in prime numbers, and when his number was introduced in 1933, it was described as the largest number in mathematics. However, Skewes’ number is no longer considered the largest possible number; that title now goes to Graham’s number. Graham’s number, which can’t be written with conventional notation, was developed by mathematician R.L. Graham. It’s so large that, even if all the matter in the universe was converted to pens and ink, it still wouldn’t be enough to write out the number in its entirety. Summary: How Many Zeros in a Googolplex? What is a googol? A googol is a 1 followed by 100 zeros. The number was first introduced by mathematician Edward Kasner, who got the name for the number from his young nephew (and which Google later used for their own name). Kasner also coined the term googolplex. And how many zeros in a googolplex? A googolplex is a 1 followed by a googol of zeros. It’s impossible to write out, but in scientific notation it looks like 1 x 1010^100. These two numbers are too large to have any practical value (they are far, far larger than the number of grains of sand or drops of water on earth, or even the number of atoms in the universe), but Kasner used them to discuss the difference between extraordinarily large numbers and the concept of infinity. Interpreting Popular Culture Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Interpreting Popular Culture Paper - Essay Example Invariably, as with most fairytales, there are indeed a myriad of different versions of Little Red Riding Hood; however, for a means of clarity and overall purpose of analysis, the forthcoming discussion will focus upon the least common denominator that is exhibited between all of these stories. This is of course the fact that a young girl meets a wolf/werewolf on the way to her grandmother’s to deliver food that her mother had prepared. Dressed in what can only be described as dainty attire, the beguiling creature attempts to ultimately trick her. In certain versions of the story the trick is successful and the wolf/werewolf eats the young girl. In other versions, the trick is unsuccessful and the girl is able to escape. However, regardless of the ending in question, the underlying moral and social representation that should be understood is one in which strong sexual overtones pervade this particular story and the importance of maintaining chastity and situational awareness are championed. One of the first elements that can and should be discussed in terms of Little Red Riding Hood and the sexual overtones that are represented throughout this story has to do with the detailed description of the little red cloak, the little red, or the little red coats that Little Red Riding Hood is claimed to wear in almost each and every variant of the tale. The importance of this symbol has to do with the fact that it ultimately represents the female hymen. As Little Red Riding Hood is depicted as a young, chaste, and ultimately your girl, the red tape that she wears is indicative of her nature and presents the analytical mind with a deeper level of understanding of the tale in terms of sleekness and sexual virtue. In many ways, it is somewhat surprising that such a painfully obvious illustration of human anatomy has gone unnoticed by countless generations of listeners, readers, and storytellers. Another core similarity that exists between almost all the variants

Research - Essay Example Conservation is mostly defined as preserving resources, that is; utilizing in away that avoid wastage of materials and environmental degradation. In this case, conservation involves natural resource conservation. Here, non renewable resources have to be conserved since they cannot be renewed (Edwards, 2005). Therefore, conservation of the environment is considered as the conservation of all the natural resources. Governments of different countries must contribute by laying down strict legislations to counter the activities that are not environment friendly, and lead to unsustainable development. Sustainability has its basis on a simple principle, which is all things that we require for our survival and well-being depend, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Therefore, sustainability creates and maintains the terms under which humans and nature can live in productive harmony that allows for the fulfillment of the economic social and other requirements of present and future generations. Further, sustainability may also be defined as a set of values (Chapin et al, 2010.). For instance, Edwards (2005) studied sustainability statements from almost forty different organizations concerned with sustainability issues and developed a list of seven common themes ;stewardship, respect for limits, interdependence, economic restructuring ,fair distribution ,intergenerational perspective and nature as a model and teacher. It is clearly seen that stewardship, conservation n sustainability protect the same natural resources however, they differ in the approaches and strategies. While conservation concentrates in avoiding wastage, stewardship concentrate on management and planning of this natural resources and sustainability puts weight on principles and set values on existing in a way that will not compromise the future generations. Ecological and

GPS navegation Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

GPS navegation - Research Paper Example Dr. Ivan came up with position finding system that relied on the time difference and construction of vehicles that used satellites for navigation. Professor Bradford Parkinson served in the navy under the air force wing. He was the manager for NAVSTAR GPS programs and would be perceived as the father of GPS (Parry, 2010). Not only did Bradford contribute in the air force navigation programs, but also handled research that led to the improvement of GPS used in the world today. On the other hand, Roger L. Easton had profound experience in spacecraft tracking and time. Roger offered his prowess in navigation technology and potential of satellite use in time travel. He also came up with theories and calculations that led to the launch of the first satellite manned with GPS. Roger involvement in the construction of time-based position vehicles and devices became of great use in the military. The creation of the three men and input of technicians gave rise to a component that has changed lives today. GPS became a critical tool in the military force, and that changed the security manning strategies (El-Rabbany, 2002). People started for feel that the military had gained necessary tools to fight menaces across the border and keep track of events that were potential threats to homeland security. Roger, Bradford, and Ivan had intended to give the military exclusive ownership to GPS to enable them hunt and track security-related concerns. However, GPS became beneficial to individuals and corporations. The NAVSTAR program gave the military of United States a fighting edge against the Soviet Union that has launched spacecraft. Air force gained a tool that could be used for accurate guidance in any position on the earth. The public learned of GPS and aired persistent demands on the use of the tool for personal purposes. Civilians saw it as a way of boosting their security and making navigation during travel

I Believe Essay Example for Free

I Believe Essay Traveling to â€Å"land of opportunities† for future studies is a dream of many people as standards and quality of education is the best in the world. I am one of those lucky people who wished to study in America and finally landed in United States for this purpose. But it was not an easy task as rules and regulation for obtaining a student’s visa is hard. But troubles do not end with getting a student visa as after coming to United States, one finds himself entangled in other difficult rules. I myself experienced all these difficulties and hardships before arrival and after arrival in United States. When I applied at the United States consulate in my native country, I had to produce certain security documents in addition to my I-20 Form (Admission letter from my institute), funding document and passport. Although these security documents were necessary to clear the security conditions but it took me many days to get these from local authorities. Additionally, I wanted to come to America thirty days prior to the start of my course date in order to accommodate myself in the American environment and learn the culture and values of Americans. But again it was not a simple thing as I have to get a visitor visa first and it was also required to register with Department of Homeland Security office upon my arrival in United States. After one month, before beginning any studies, I must obtain a change of classification through Form I-539 (application for Change of Nonimmigrant Status). As these rules were hard to understand and were harder to follw, so I decided to end this venture. I believe that these procedures are cumbersome and forces one not to apply for a visa thirty days prior to the corse start date. I also believe that student must come earlier (more than thirty days) to United States to get an acquintance with the local customs, traditions and environment. There is another condition for F-1 visa that students must be enrolled as a full-time student at the institution. But sometime Institute does offer long duration courses in Language Proficiency but does not give it full time course status to these courses. This creates a lot of problem in getting student visa and students in this case only gets visit visa. I think that Language courses must also be included in the category of full time courses or the Visa rule about these courses should be relaxed and a student visa should be issued for these. There is another part of the visa application process; an interview at the embassy consular section is required for visa applicants. I believe that this interview process is an extra thing as students waits a lot to be called for interview. Again a communication barrier is another problem because students can not convey the real information due to language inability. He can not understand the questions of the Visa Clearance Office in the right context. This results in the failure of getting a visa. The immigration rules related to medical check-up and vaccinations is another problem that students face. I myself have to undergo a lot of difficult procedures. I believe that vaccination is necessary and United States has the right to allow only the healthy person to enter in its territory but these procedures must be simplified. Another hard rule is related to employment. According to the F-1 rules, maximum of 20 hours/week is allowed while the studies are in progress whereas during annual break periods one can work up to 40 hours a week. I believe that students must be given more time so that they can earn enough to partially support their non-curricular activities. It does not mean that their studies should be sacrificed but they should be allowed according heir spare time. Students should use this money to visit various parts of America and to get knowledge of American culture and geography. Another employment rule is related to on-campus job. One can not take jobs outside the college or institute premises. I think that this regulation is unfair as only few jobs are available on the campus. Furthermore, every international student tries to get job on the premises. This makes the situation difficult. So it is not possible for every student to get a job on his/her own campus. I think that this rule should be relaxed and students should b allowed to work in the surroundings of the university or institute. Again after one year, students are allowed to work off-campus bit it needs the approval of the institute. I believe that this procedure again creates difficulties for the students. Although jobs in the local surroundings are not rare but they are processed so quickly that after getting an approval from institute, they remain no more available. Although I suffered from only a few of these hard rules but most of the prospective students become a victim of one or more of these rules. So I think that these rules should be altered in order to take care of the students’ needs. Government must take initiative to accommodate the students and their genuine requirements.

Pepsi’s Growth and Marketing Strategies :: GCSE Business Management Studies

INTRODUCTION Pepsi-Cola Pepsi's beverage business was founded by a pharmacist named Caleb Bradham who created a special beverage, a soft drink, in the back room of his drug store in New Bern, North Carolina (Pepsi Co, 2004). It has become one of today’s leading soft drink with nearly $20 billion in worldwide retail sales (PepsiCo Inc., 2003), and like what coke has, Pepsi also has a variety of products in the world, such as Pepsi-Cola, diet Pepsi, Pepsi max, mountain dew and so forth. In this report, we will specifically focus on Pepsi-Cola, and the aim of this report is to summarize and analyse Pepsi’s growth strategy as well as its marketing strategies. Firstly, the background of Pepsi Company and their products will be summarized. Secondly, four elements or components will be analysed in this report, which are based on: * Product * Price * Place * Promotion Finally, some recommendations relative to Pepsi’s marketing strategy will be suggested. In order to make the information of this report accurate and forceful, several valuable sources were used to analyse. Those sources including: * Marketing textbook * Academic paper * Internet * Online business magazines BACKGROUND Pepsi Co. is a Multinational corporation, which extends over many countries; Pepsi and Frito-Lay merged in 1960, which named the new company Pepsi Co. Besides, Pepsi Co. has merged with some other companies such as Gatorade, which became the world’s fifth-largest food and beverage company with 15 brands. The company operates in a monopolistically competitive market, where its biggest competitor is Coca-Cola. Pepsi brand name and its strategic message ‘it’s the cola’ have already penetrated the world market. In this case the brand name ‘Pepsi’ is very effective in differentiating its product from the others. Within the soft drink industry Pepsi is considered to be a middle class drink and Pepsi offers quality product that provides assurance to the public. Pepsi is undertaking both advertising and marketing campaigns around the world, its advertising campaign include TV, magazines, in-stores, outdoors and on the Internet. The marketing campaigns it undertook include lucky draw and promotions. For example in Singapore there is a promotion done by Pepsi that for every 6-pack of Pepsi you purchase you can have a turn on the fortune wheel to win prizes such as Pepsi t-shirt, more Pepsi drinks and cash prizes. This is done when the economy is in recession and Pepsi is trying to boost up its company and product image. Pepsi’s target market has usually been the middle-income family, as Pepsi is not as expensive as Coke and not as cheap as the other brands. Pepsi around the world usually target toward young people early teens to late twenties, however this is still based on location

Business process reengineering Essay

This article is about business process reengineering. business processes we can say is the core tasks that are carried out in departments in an organization for the ultimate goal of delivering a product and a high quality one at that and services to the satisfaction of the customer. Business process reengineering is the modeling of the existing processed to steer the organization towards better performance. This is not considered to be done over a long period of time but rather it is something which is done at once so in a way there is a change of the way things are done but the aim is to come up with a better way for a better benefit. Examples of business processes is the manner in which information flows in an organization, management, departmental tasks,, that is the sales and marketing, production, as well as operational and technical support. Business process reengineering strategy is to improve the business competitive advantage. In discussion is its scope and strength. In consideration is the size of the business alongside the composition of the market. Its main aim is improving the existing business processes and sees how they make a business much better than it was before. We can also call it business transformation whereby the existing organization transforms the way work is done with a way of improving the services as well reducing the costs. It is also aimed at adding value to the existing business; processes and maintain the ones which are relevant as they are while at the same time minimizing or getting rid of those that do not add value to the organization. The article also speaks about organizational culture. An organization is a work setting which comprises of employees. These may be in different departments e. g. sales and marketing, production, and transport department. These departments are interdependent and they support one another in their functions. Their main aim is for the organization to achieve its goals and objectives. It comprises of employees who are the human resources. Culture in itself is beliefs, norms, attitudes, values and experiences of an organization and the people who work there. Organizational culture is the way things are done there. There is a trend of the way the management operates and the way people behave and the manner in which they work. An example of an organization culture is the role culture where emphasis is laid on the concentration on the task carried out. Teamwork is also is a type of culture where tasks are accomplished by a group of people working together with a common goal. They however work as a tea m but this they do in order to achieve the organization goals and objectives as a whole. This is the analysis of the existing business processes in which case is the way tasks are carried out in an organization and working towards transforming them and implementing the new process with the aim improving products and services that the organization offers. A group of processes are observed whereby individual tasks are allocated to a team with a wide range of expertise to accomplish with the main aim of achieving the organization goals and objectives. It is also aimed at improving the organization efficiency and effectiveness. The main aim of BPR is to increase an organization competitive advantage and a new competitive edge. An organization can achieve its goals a fresh through business process reengineering since it is as good as new. Cost is the price at which the end product is sold for. In cost strategy the consideration is to penetrate the market with a low price while at the same time offering the standard quality product and even better than that of the competitor but a lower cost. This will be seen to give an organization the competitive edge. The key issue is to maintain the quality of the product while liasing with all the department s in order to ensure that at all costs the cost is reduced from the marketing department to the production department. Cost reduction should be considered in all aspects of the organization and in the whole business process as a whole . this will enable the organisation to reach the consumer with a high quality product and a t a favourable price. Another organization process is production. This is the conversion of the raw materials into a product. The organization has a plant in which there is manual machinery which is used in the production process. Human effort is considered in loading the materials some of them onto the machinery for production. Efficiency is required in order to ensure that the product at the end of the day is prepared on time and also should be of the standard quality. At all times the organization should seek ways to ensure that the costs of production are kept at the minimum in order to ensure that the product reaches the market at a low price, in order to enjoy a competitive advantage. This is the computerized use of machinery. The machinery in the organization is controlled using computers and all the production processes are computer controlled. This will ensure that the product is of high quality, speed will be increased since the machines work much faster than human beings. Efficiency is enhanced where there is continuity of the work being done as well as the uniformity since the machines do not take days off. This will ensure that the supply of products in the market is constant and availability is enhanced. Supplies also can be made even on orders which have been made over a short period of time since the machinery can be able to meet the production to be done with the minimum time possible. This can also ensure that there is a reduction in the cost of production where there are no many human resources required together with the expenses that go with them like medical cover, housing allowances, as well as pension funds. Cost reduction is effective, and it ensures that the product at the end of the day penetrates the market at a very low cost which will enable the organization to build a large customer base, and also expand its market share. This is a combination of beliefs, attitudes, norms adopted by people in an organization and the manner in which they work. It is best described as a collection of norms and values by people and groups working in an organization. This is a type of culture where efforts are directed towards a product or a service being delivered. it brings human resources together and also pulling resources together for the benefit of coming up with the best possible product or service. It is a team culture whereby a team is built and it is assigned a certain project with an aim of achieving a certain goal and objective. In this culture the team is composed of people qualified in different fields of expertise and is marked by sessions of brainstorming where ideas are formed on how to accomplish the set task. There is also an element of friendliness, as the members all the employees working in a team have to combine efforts and hence each one of them is as important and hence they have got to form alliances. It is from expertise that power is derived. Team members have a scope of ideas which they bring on board and contribute towards accomplishment of the set tasks. The main aim is to reduce costs in all aspects of the organization from sales and marketing and other departments to production. This will ensure that the end consumer will enjoy a lower price of the product than that of the competitor. Cutting costs should be considered in all the organization processes. When the cost is reduced the product is able to penetrate the market at a relatively lower price than that of the competitor products. This will increase the market share as well as the profits. When there is an increase in the profits the organization will also be able to run efficiently and be able to meet its consumer needs as well as enjoy growth in terms of better service and product delivery. This can be achieved through mass s production and distribution, reduction of waste and also a reduction of the market force while also maintaining a goal oriented team. This is the time for business process reengineering. It should be considered since it is for the better of the organization where it gets rid of obsolete business processes and introducing and bringing fresh ideas and ways of working in an organization in order to come up with fresh ideas as well as improve the organization efficiency in delivery of products and services. Organization culture plays an important role in the way an organization operates. It is very important that an organization adopts a culture that favours its goals and objectives and enhances the growth of the organization as well as ensure that it encourages the employees to work towards achieving the organization goals.

Lord of the Flies Narrative Poem Essay

I, the island, all alone in the sea, Have been invaded by humanity. A plane crashed while escaping war, And left several schoolboys upon my shore. In my jungle, a scar their tube did make, And simultaneously, my peace it did take. Two boys blew into a shell from my beach. All came to whom the sound did reach. They decided that they needed a chief, And Ralph was chosen, to Jack’s grief. The boys thought that survival would be fun, But were they ready to get the work done? Their happiness didn’t last and fears did rise. A snake-beast was spotted by a littlun’s eyes. They decided to build a signal fire upon my mountain head, But out of control, the fire did spread. Missing is the littlun who saw the beast, Yet the boys don’t seem to care that he’s likely deceased! Pig hunting became Jack’s obsession. The boys abandoned building huts in their transgression. Only Ralph and Simon remained to work, While in my bathing pool the rest did lurk. Simon is the only one who respects my beauty. Why is rescue not everyone’s top priority? The littluns are barely being taken care of, The older boys neglect to show them love. Jack and the boys hunted pigs and let the fire die. Ralph got angry, there was no signal as a ship passed by. The boys caught a pig so they chant and dance, But spirits were dampened at the loss of a rescue chance. The boys’ work ethics, Ralph did doubt: Defecating everywhere, poor shelter, fire gone out! Thanks to Jack, the beast continued to bring fear, The littluns claimed to have seen it near. The voices of Piggy and Simon are kept quiet, And Jack lead the others into a frantic riot. Upon my mountain a dead parachutists did land, The twins spotted it and ran down to the sand. They claimed to have spotted a beast on my hill, Now all the boys want to do is to find it and kill. They searched a cave but the creature was not there, In fact there was no beast anywhere! Ralph is losing control of the bestial boys, All this talk of beasts is just useless noise. The real evil is inside the human mind, But to this fact these boys appear to be blind. Due to these children, my land has been hewn, I hope that they leave me alone again soon.

10 Tips for Getting a Staff Writing Job

10 Tips for Getting a Staff Writing Job 10 Tips for Getting a Staff Writing Job 10 Tips for Getting a Staff Writing Job By Mark Nichol Chances are that your job involves some writing, but perhaps demonstrating that skill doesn’t constitute enough of your workload, or it’s not the type of writing you’d like to do. Or perhaps you’re still in college, or have a job that doesn’t involve writing any more complicated than signing your time sheet. Regardless of your situation, at least some of the following tips will help lead you toward the writing job you want. 1. Develop a portfolio of college or continuing-education writing projects that resemble the work you would like to do professionally, and distribute it, or samples from it, to people who work at a company or in a profession that interests you. 2. Blog about your passions, on your own blog or someone else’s. Again, emulate the kind of writing you want to get paid to do. 3. Find people who do what you want to do for a living and volunteer to do some writing for them to supplement, not to pass off as, their own assignments. 4. Submit articles to a local publication or to a website for a nonprofit organization with a mission or an area of interest that appeals to you. If they can’t pay you, offer to write for them anyway (at first). 5. Obtain an internship in a professional field you’d like to be part of, and persist in asking people you report to for writing assignments until they comply just to get you out of their office. Make yourself indispensable so that when a writing position is created or becomes vacant, managers will think of you. 6. Get an entry-level job in a company or organization that sells or does something you like, and act like an intern. And, just as an intern should, become the person known for stepping up and solving problems so that your name comes up when a writing-job vacancy appears. 7. To help you develop your skills, study the publications you desire to contribute to or familiarize yourself with the types of documents you wish to write. 8. At informational interviews, ask what people in the interviewees’ positions look for when they assign or accept content, and refer them to your blog or another online source of samples of your writing and ask if they can spare some time later for a brief critique. 9. Volunteer for a group or organization that supports or otherwise is integral to the profession you want to work in. Offer to be a chapter secretary or outreach coordinator or webmaster/website content manager all jobs that require writing. 10. Start out as a freelance writer (search this site for those keywords for information and advice), and ask your clients to let you know about job openings at their company or elsewhere in the industry. Nurse Practitioner Schooling How Long Is It What Do You Learn

Nurse Practitioner Schooling How Long Is It What Do You Learn SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Are you thinking about becoming a nurse practitioner? It can be a great way to make more money and have more responsibility at your job.But what options are there for nurse practitioner schooling? How long does it take to become a nurse practitioner? How do you apply, and what do you do once you begin a nurse practitioner program? In this guide, we answer those questions and give you all the information you need to know about nurse practitioner school. What Are Nurse Practitioner Schools? To become a nurse practitioner, you’ll need to get one of two graduate degrees: a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).In this section we analyze both of the degrees and give advice on which program you should pursue. Master’s of Science in Nursing Degree The MSN is a master’s program, and the coursework will often be similar to the coursework required to become an RN, although more specialized and at a higher level. You’ll learn the skills needed for patient care and case management so that you’re prepared to handle patients on your own and prescribe medication (if the state you live in allows NPs to write prescriptions). There are MSN programs for all the main nurse practitioner specializations, such as neonatal, family, psychiatric, and women’s health nurse practitioner specializations, among others. The coursework is a mixture of core classes all nurse practitioners take, courses in your field of specialization, and clinical practicum hours. Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree The DNP program covers all the information and skills you’ll learn in an MSN program, but you’ll take additional courses that teach you more about leadership, health care policy, and using evidence-based care in clinical practice, among other areas. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), all DNP programs must have courses that prepare students in the following eight core areas: Scientific underpinnings for practice Organizational and systems leadership for quality improvement and systems thinking Clinical scholarship and analytical methods for evidence-based practice Information systems/technology and patient care technology for the improvement and transformation of health care Health care policy for advocacy in health care Interprofessional collaboration for improving patient and population health outcomes Clinical prevention and population health for improving the nation’s health Advanced nursing practice DNP students must also complete an original scholarly work, often known as the DNP project, that shows they can apply the knowledge they learned to an actual issue affecting nursing. The DNP is a doctorate and a terminal degree, and it provides a broader area of skills than an MSN degree. In addition to learning the skills needed to be an effective nurse practitioner, those who graduate from a DNP program also are better prepared for leadership positions because they have more background in health care policy and better understand how hospitals and other healthcare facilities are run. Which Nurse Practitioner Program Should You Do? Both programs will qualify you to be a nurse practitioner, so you can really do either. Additionally, there isn’t much of a salary difference between nurse practitioners who have their MSN versus those with their DNP (the average annual salary of nurse practitioners across the country is just over $100,000.) MSN programs are shorter and are typically offered by more schools, including more online programs, which can make balancing school and other commitments easier. However, if you’re looking to achieve the top level of nursing education and/or learn more leadership and management skills, a DNP is the better option.Additionally, the AACN recommends that nurses hoping to become nurse practitioners get their DNP instead of their MSN, but they accept both as proper qualification. The choice depends on which program you think works better for your schedule and career plans. Also, you get your MSN, you can later go back and get your DNP in a two-year program if you later decide that’s what you want. How Long Do Nurse Practitioners Go to School? How long does it take to become a nurse practitioner? This answer depends both on your background and which NP degree you want to get, though you can become a nurse practitioner in as little as two years. The length of the two NP programs are as follows: Master’s of Science in Nursing: 2 (sometimes 3) years Doctor of Nursing Practice: 3-4 years However, you need to be a registered nurse (RN) to begin nurse practitioner school. If you already have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) and have worked for several years as an RN, then you can go directly into either of the graduate programs. If, on the other hand, you don’t have a background in nursing, nurse practitioner schooling will take significantly longer.A BSN degree can take four years, although if you already have a bachelor’s degree in another field, there are often shorter programs that only take about two to three years, while an Associate’s Degree in Nursing usually takes two years to complete. This means it could take you up to eight years to become a nurse practitioner, depending on which combination of degrees you get. There are also a few programs that combine either a BSN or an ADN with a nurse practitioner program (often known as â€Å"bridge programs†), which will take less time to complete. These are often about five years, although the exact length of each program will vary based on the school. How Do You Get Into Nurse Practitioner Schools? As mentioned above, to apply to nurse practitioner schools, you need to be an RN with either a BSN or (sometimes) an ADN degree. There are a few nurse practitioner schools that accept students without a nursing background and offer a combined BSN and NP program, but these are uncommon and will take significantly longer than standard nurse practitioner schooling. If you don’t have a background in nursing, you will likely have to complete prerequisites in several course areas before you can begin a joint BS/RN program. Prerequisites will often be in the following areas: Biology Biochemistry Chemistry Human biology Microbiology Nutrition Psychology Statistics If you are an RN, you will also need to have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) exam administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) (which you’d need to pass anyway to work as an RN). Most nurse practitioner programs also require you to have some experience working as a nurse before you start your nurse practitioner degree. One to two years of experience is generally the minimum amount required, but, on average, nurses have ten years of experience before they go to school to become nurse practitioners. You’ll need solid grades, but they don’t need to be as high as they would be if you were applying to med school. Generally, a college GPA of 3.0 or higher is enough to get you into many nurse practitioner programs. Your grades in human biology/anatomy and other classes related to nursing will be the most important. Applying to nurse practitioner school is like a combination of applying to college and applying to a job. Similar to applying to other schools, you'll need to submit transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE test scores, and personal statements. However, like a job, you'll also need to provide a resume and contact information for references, and you'll likely have at least one interview per school during which you'll discuss your employment history. What Do You Do at a Nurse Practitioner School? Many nurse practitioners describe nurse practitioner school as similar to getting their RN, but faster-paced and with less hand-holding than you may have experienced in undergrad. You’ll generally divide your time between three areas: core classes, classes that focus on the specialtyyou’ve chosen, and clinicals. The core classes will typically focus on issues all nurse practitioners face or need to know how to deal with, such as using evidence-based practices, advanced nursing practices, statistics, pharmacology, and community health. Specialized classes will vary depending on which area you choose to focus in. There are many specialties nurse practitioner students can choose, including acute care, family medicine, neonatal care, oncology, psychiatry, and women’s health. You’ll also typically have to complete 500-800 clinical hours to graduate. Your class grades will usually be based on your scores on both papers and tests, although you’ll likely write more papers in grad school than you did in undergrad.Online nurse practitioner programs as well as hybrid online/in-person programs are also growing in popularity, and more students are choosing this option since it allows for greater flexibility when studying and completing coursework. License requirements for nurse practitioners vary by state but, in general, once you’ve completed your classes, you can then sit for the nurse practitioner exam and, after passing, begin work as a nurse practitioner. Summary: Nurse Practitioner Schooling A nurse practitioner degree allows nurses to make more money and have more responsibilities. In order to become a nurse practitioner, you need to get one of two degrees: a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).Both qualify you to become a nurse practitioner, but the DNP is a terminal degree and makes you more qualified for leadership positions. How long does it take to become a nurse practitioner? If you already have your BSN, getting your nurse practitioner degree will take about two to four years, depending on which degree you get.If you don’t have your BSN, it’ll often take longer, up to eight years, to become a nurse practitioner. The application process for nurse practitioner schooling is similar to when you applied for college, although you’ll need to provide more information, such as a resume and references from past employers.Once you start the nurse practitioner program, most students find it similar to nursing school, but faster-paced and with more papers. After you’ve completed nurse practitioner school, you’re able to take your certification test, and, once you pass, you can begin working as a nurse practitioner. What's Next?
